BA(HONS) Graphic Design: Summer Project 2
This time we had to record our own audio footage and find a way of typographically displaying it on an A2 poster. I recorded the Athlete’s Parade which was playing in Trafalgar Square. The red arrows flew over my head, along with the British Airways golden plane, Navy helicopters and a very large plane I can’t remember the name of. People were cheering, Amy McDonald sang a song and commentators were announcing what was going on. Boris Johnson also made a speech at the end, which is what I have quoted in the bottom right corner using the Olympics font. All of this was filmed by various helicopters hovering around us. BA(HONS) Graphic Design: Summer Project 1
This project involved picking from a selection of youtube videos and finding a way to display the essence of the piece. I chose Rodger McGough’s poem ‘To Die a Young Man’s Death’. The main themes I chose to focus on was defying stereotypes. I created three photographs, my favourite being the above. This depicts my grandma out drinking my 18 year old brother and staying up late into the night playing video games. Just goes to shows you’re never too old. View Larger

BA(HONS) Graphic Design: Year 1 (L4) Semester 2 Assessment

Here is a photo of most of my work together, labelled and clipped. I was really happy with my final outcomes during this semester and had taken more care over my presentation compared to the first semester.

BA(HONS) Graphic Design: Personal Made Public

Our last project for the first year was a self-initiated one. We could chose anything to focus on. I particularly enjoyed the first term when looking at type and so decided to create a typeface myself. I started by collecting objects from my room, scanning them and digitally transforming then into letters (I have included letters E, K and L above). I thought this was looking quite effective, but after my crit I found out that this wasn’t the case. It was too clichéd.

This lead me to use my own handwriting as a starting point, after all what’s more personal than hand-writing? I ended up scanning into Illustrator a set of capitals and lowercase letters plus my Ö. To display the final alphabet I have created a decorative pattern out of the negative shapes made from the capital letters (close up above) and below this have placed the full alphabet. I also made two more decorative versions, which I prefer. I have called this semi-typeface TAÖ. I say semi- because it’s just the letters, no numbers or special characters included.

Not only did I work in a sketchbook, but I also had a lot of fun with my scanner, as you can see. My favourites are definitely the red, black and white ones. This is something I would like to use in future projects, however I’m not entirely sure how just yet.

BA(HONS) Graphic Design: Art of the Accident Part 2 - Revisited

Since the crit I have made a few changes to the three posters. The main differences include smaller and newly placed text, the removal of the Starbucks cup and adding the picture logo onto the designs.

BA(HONS) Graphic Design: I Take Issue With That!

I have now made my book! I am so proud of it. Never sewn a book before, so it was nice to do something new. The title is: Book of Peeves and there are 30 pages in total, divided up into four sections: Language, Food, People and Miscellaneous.

I had a lot of fun designing this book, using friends’ and family pet hates… some were really quite odd, but they often made the best pages. I wish I could have spent more time on it in order to use all the suggested peeves that I got told by various people. A big book would have been lovely. Maybe I’ll do a full version over the summer.

BA(HONS) Graphic Design: I Take Issue With That!

This project has been all about finding something you have an issue with or take issue with. I chose to focus on pet hates. Initially I looked at my own, but after a crit with Gavin Ambrose and Phil Taylor I changed my idea and started looking at other people’s pet peeves too.

I got some very funny and unusual responses from friends and family. The images above are two mock up pages for the humorous book I am planning on making in order to collate all the responses I got.

BA(HONS) Graphic Design: Semiotics Project

Working in pairs we were set the task to create a book of semiotics. You chose 5 topics from a very long list which you were going to create 10 icons, symbols or indexes for. The topics Amanda Franklin and I chose were: Communication, Power, Zone, Gender and Sight. We decided to make our book interactive, which has been a lot of fun to design.

It has been a really enjoyable project – my favourite so far! I have found it really interesting researching and making my own symbols. My Illustrator skills have advanced considerably, as have my InDesign. A lot of it has been through trial and error, but I’ve got there in the end. The images above are a few photos of layout sheets, pouch colours and a photo of the mock book printed on white paper. The finished version will be uploaded at a later date.

Eventually, after a lot of different versions, I selected these three posters for my campaign. My others included greens and deep, browny-reds. However, I decided to stick to simpler designs, with a much smaller colour palette because the designs looked more unified.

After my crit, it was brought to my attention that my text and logo placement could be more interesting and subtler. So this is something I am going to work on for my semester assessment.
